Flax or boiled linseed oil is used to protect wood and enhance its natural beauty.

In contact with air, the oil polymerizes and dries, forming a hard but slightly flexible film, although the drying time is always longer than that of a varnish.

The blotter-fired oil version dries faster and is recommended as otherwise it can take several days or weeks to dry, depending mainly on the amount of oil used and the ambient temperature.

The advantage of raw flax oil is that it does not have any type of additive or treatment, it is only natural oil.

It is a very easy finish to apply: with a brush or a cloth (more recommended) it is applied on the wood, wait 15 minutes and remove the excess that has not been absorbed. Once dry, you can apply in the same way as many layers as we deem necessary to have the protection and appearance that you want.

Some parts, such as gun butts, are prepared by submerging them for months in oil.

It is a very easy finish to correct, when it gets damaged over time you only have to clean the wood and apply more oil, it is not necessary to remove the previous one and it is enough to cover the damaged areas so that it is homogeneous.

IMPORTANT: flax oil is self-igniting. The chemical process by which oil hardens generates heat. Applied to wood, the amount of heat produced is imperceptible. However, in certain extreme situations, rags or paper soaked in oil can generate enough heat to catch fire.

The situation to avoid is to throw together many oil-soaked rags or paper, compacted and without ventilation, in a hot and dry environment.

To avoid any danger, just follow these recommendations:

  • If you are using kitchen paper or rags that are going to be thrown away, leave them flat until they are dry.
  • If you are using rags that are going to be washed, put them in a bucket of water until they are washed.

If you have any questions about how to use the oil, please contact us.
