Dried jatoba wood board, brushed and squared. Manually selected.
Wood of South American origin, orange-brown in color, sometimes tending towards dark red. The shade darkens with time and exposure to light. It has an intermediate texture and good natural shine.
Jatoba wood is one of the most resistant and hardest among those considered in common use. It is widely used outdoors, since it withstands the elements, fungi and attacks by termites and other insects exceptionally well.
It is a difficult wood to work with hand tools due to its hardness, although it does not damage the edges like other woods that have mineral content. However, it does not present problems when gluing or applying finishes.
It is frequently used for the manufacture of pallets, but also for furniture, tool handles, boats and lathes.
Although it is often called “Brazilian cherry” in English, it has no relation to the black cherry (genus Prunus), except for the color, which is quite similar to the reddish brown of antique cherry furniture.
