Dried Mahogany wood plank, planed and squared. Manually selected.
Mahogany is without a doubt the wood par excellence. Historically one of the most used woods for high-end and luxury furniture, although it also has many applications for musical instruments or even boats.
It is one of the easiest woods to work with and most appreciated in every way, from the manual process to the finish.
The texture is slightly rough, and sealers are often used in the finish to achieve those perfect, shiny surfaces associated with mahogany.
The color is orange brown with some golden tones. The grain is soft but visible, much more contrasted when applying finishes.
It is interesting to differentiate royal mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), native to South America and also known as Brazilian mahogany or Honduran mahogany, from African mahogany (Khaya ivorensis). The color of both is similar, but African mahogany is much harder and heavier, and the mineral content is much higher, making it more difficult to work.
